Dr. Varla Clearview

Dr. Varla Clearview was one of those mad scientists you always hear about. She wasn’t always quite so mad though. In fact she cured the last cause of sight deterioration.

Her laboratory is on a hill in Pennsylvania. The lab was white and sterile. Optical equipment was scattered everywhere. Dr. Clearview had been attempting to improve human sight For lack of volunteers, she was forced to experiment on herself.

The machine consisted of a pair of bulky goggles with lots of rubber straps with a cord that connected to a large glowing apparatus. There were several lights, gauges, and switches–the purpose of which is nearly impossible to describe to one without a great depth of knowledge in the field of optometry.

There were several sparks and a very loud whirring sound then the procedure was over.

Dr. Clearview opened her eyes and began to test her new vision. At first nothing seemed particularly different about her vision. She focused on a large electromagnet on the other side of the room. After a few seconds she started to notice a corona of color pulsating from either pole of the magnet. “Dear God, I can see electromagnetic fields!” She uttered aloud.

Next she opened her window. Her was dark outside but she could see the world as clear day. she could even pick out the colors of objects in the dim moonlight.

When she looked a little harder her eyes would focus in on objects and magnify them. “Accipiter Striatus could not see better than I with these new eyes,” Dr. Clearview whispered to some unknown listener.

She then honed in on a piece of pie on the table. She stared long and hard. Her field of view narrowed and her area of interest magnified. Soon she could see the microscopic creatures living on the piece of food. She began to feel as though her sterile laboratory were not so sterile after all. She looked at her own arm and watched tiny organisms wriggling around on her flesh. She gazed disgusted and perplexed.

She tried to wash herself clean but there were things all over everything. There were things inside her. There was nothing to be done. Still, Dr. Clearview could not rid herself of that burning, itching sense of impurity.

If you go to that laboratory on that hill in Pennsylvania today, you will find a strange woman with huge eyes like those of a bird of prey. You will see that she has scratched her skin in some places right down to the bone.

Perhaps you will feel a bitter lump of sorrow down in your guts because she has the awful burden of viewing the world so much more clearly than you.
